Zarcero: Charming Mountain Town in Costa Rica
Zarcero Costa Rica is a pleasant little mountain town. It is most known for its topiary garden in front of the town center’s Catholic church, which features over 100 sculpted bushes and trees. Visitors can also explore the town’s colonial architecture and enjoy the cool climate.
Tourists in Costa Rica tend to focus on the country’s beaches rather than inland communities like Zarcero. Therefore, there is undiscoverable beauty to be explored in this tropical mountain hideaway. Zarcero Costa Rica is located at an elevation of 1,736 meters (or 5,695 feet), provides travelers with peaceful places to pause and rest as well as picturesque views of coffee plantations.
Because of its elevation, this town, which is a part of Alajuela‘s agricultural region and where country-folk take pride in their planting and harvesting practices, enjoys a particularly cool climate. In addition to coffee plantations, visitors can also explore the town’s charming architecture and cultural attractions. The town’s central park is a popular gathering spot for locals and tourists alike, offering a glimpse into daily life in this vibrant community.
Zarcero Central Park Garden
The amusing topiary art that animates Zarcero’s central park is a treat to see firsthand (also referred to as Alfaro Ruiz). Carved into the park’s shrubs by a local resident, you’ll find everything from animals, birds, dinosaurs, and human figures to abstract designs and a replica of the Parroquia San Rafael Arcángel (Saint Rafael Arcángel Parish), the church that towers over the park’s east side.
Walking through the row of carved arches that runs from Zarcero’s main street (Road 141) to the steps leading to the church’s front entrance is enjoyable. It’s also worth taking a walk around the park to admire the other landscaping, which includes gardens of ornamental grasses and blue-hued hydrangeas. In addition, during the Christmas season, the park is illuminated with a beautiful light display (pictured below).
Los Angeles Cloud Forest Reserve
Additionally, the Los Angeles Cloud Forest Reserve is yet another attraction in the Zarcero community. This private park is the ideal location for a peaceful getaway because it is somewhat remote. The reserve is situated on land that once belonged to Rodrigo Carazo, a former president of Costa Rica. It offers excellent trails and the chance to appreciate various wildlife species. Visitors can also enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The park is open to the public, and guided tours are available for those who want to learn more about the flora and fauna of the area.
